Curriculum K-2nd Grades

Spanish at St. Mary

Our program supports academic preparation for success in the primary grades and middle school while upholding Catholic values. The focus of each class is on developing grammar skills: building vocabulary through singing, speaking, reading and writing. The activities in every unit of study provide ample opportunities for learning new vocabulary in different formats, and role-playing real-life situations. Another component of this program is the exploration of Latin American cultures through stories, music, food and games.

Kindergarten through 2nd grade students work on greetings, days of the week, clothing, opposites, colors, months, vowels, the alphabet, shapes, their community and numbers. We work on worksheets, read stories, sing songs, play Kahoot and Quizlet and use videos in Spanish to enhance learning.

The program exposes children, grades K-4, to approximately thirty minutes of Spanish language instruction twice a week. This new school year will bring new experiences including Mexican food, celebrating cultural holidays, and music.

Getting children interested in learning a foreign language is always a challenge; many methods besides traditional teaching methods are used here at St. Mary School.
